27 Years of Buchenbeisl
The Beginning of the Buchenbeisl
Norbert Schmidt opens the Gasthaus zum Buchenbeisl in Karmarschgasse 50, Vienna-Favoriten, under the company name Norbert Schmidt Gastronomie KG on the 4th of January 1999. From the very beginning, hospitality, traditional Viennese cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere are at the heart of the business.
The Next Generation Joins
At just 19 years old, Manuel Schmidt begins actively working in the family business and taking on responsibility. In the same year, he organizes the first Oktoberfest at the Buchenbeisl – the beginning of a tradition that continues to this day.
Official Entry into the Family Business
Manuel Schmidt officially joins the business and has since been involved in the daily operation and continued development of the Buchenbeisl.
A Gathering Place for the Neighborhood
Over the years, the Buchenbeisl becomes a popular meeting place for regular guests, families, local clubs and neighbors. Countless events, celebrations and shared memories shape this period. Of Course, our „Blacky“ is Everytime on Board!
The COVID-19 Pandemic
Like many restaurants, the Buchenbeisl faces significant challenges during the pandemic. Thanks to loyal guests, determination and a strong sense of community, the restaurant successfully overcomes this difficult time.
A fresh Start
Following the difficult pandemic years, life gradually returns to the restaurant. Events, celebrations and social gatherings once again become an important part of the Buchenbeisl experience.

On Christmas Eve, the Buchenbeisl lost its founder, and Manuel Schmidt lost his father, best friend, and the person who shaped his life like no other. With the passing of Norbert Schmidt, the family lost not only a restaurateur, entrepreneur and host, but also a father, best friend, trusted advisor and the heart of the house. For more than 25 years, he shaped the Buchenbeisl with passion, kindness and tireless dedication. To many guests, he was far more than a restaurant owner – he was a familiar face, a listening ear and a cherished part of the local community. His passing left a void that can never truly be filled. Yet his spirit, his values and his love for Viennese tavern culture continue to live on in the Buchenbeisl every single day.
A new chapter Begins
On September 27, 2025, Manuel Schmidt officially takes over the management and leads the Buchenbeisl into its next generation.
Today
For more than 27 years, the Buchenbeisl has stood for authentic Viennese cuisine, genuine hospitality and memorable moments in the heart of Vienna’s Favoriten district. What began in 1999 continues today with the very same passion and dedication.
